Alberta Fishing Licence 2026: Cost, WiN Card and AlbertaRELM

That order matters because Alberta rules change by watershed and waterbody. A valid licence does not make a closed water open, and a Family Fishing Weekend does not remove bait, harvest, or closure rules.

Alberta runs fishing purchases through the Wildlife Identification Number system and the AlbertaRELM portal. If you have bought Alberta hunting or fishing products before, you may already have a WiN linked to your profile.

For 2026, Alberta moved Walleye Special Harvest Licences to direct purchase instead of a draw. The direct-purchase window opens on April 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. Mountain Time through AlbertaRELM and licence issuers.

• Who can buy: Alberta residents with a valid WiN. Most buyers also need an Alberta Resident Sportfishing Licence unless an exemption applies, such as anglers under 16 or Alberta residents 65 or older.
• How it works: Licences are sold while quotas remain for the listed waterbodies and licence classes.
• Cost: $12.00 before GST for each Walleye Special Harvest Licence.

For the 2026-2027 Alberta regulation year, the listed Family Fishing Weekends are July 11 to 12, 2026 and February 13 to 15, 2027.

During those dates, Albertans and visitors can fish without buying a sportfishing licence on waterbodies that remain open under the current regulations. All other rules still apply, including bait restrictions, harvest limits, area closures, and the sportfishing licence requirement for Walleye Special Harvest Licence trips. Alberta keeps two no-charge resident categories that are easy to miss if you only look at the standard fee table.

• Residents 65+: No sportfishing licence required.
• Resident Canadian Armed Forces veterans aged 16 to 64: No-charge resident sportfishing licence.
