Choose Visitor Class and Validation Before Checkout
For an NWT visitor trip, settle two things before checkout: the licence class and the destination. Resident Canadian and non-resident visitors can choose season, 3-day, or 1-day products. Great Bear Lake requires M1 authorization, the ISR requires I1 authorization, and Edéhzhíe or Parks Canada waters need separate permit or licence checks.

Choose the class and season, 3-day, or 1-day product before checkout.

Short answer
Where to go next
Choosing an NWT visitor licence online
Choose the class and short-trip product before checkout.
NWT visitor split: Choose the season, 3-day, or 1-day licence first; then check Great Bear Lake, ISR, Edéhzhíe, or park-boundary requirements before checkout. Under section 27(1) of the Northwest Territories Fishery Regulations, the age exemption described for the standard licence covers anglers under 16; non-residents under 16 must also be accompanied by a licence holder. The current GNWT licence table separately lists anglers under 16 or aged 65 or older as exempt from the territory sport fishing licence when they have a valid NWT or Canadian address. An angler aged exactly 16 is outside those age exemptions and needs the standard licence. Check residency classification and any special-area validation as well.
NWT visitor trips are easiest when the licence class and the special-area question are settled together. Great Bear Lake, the ISR, Edéhzhíe, and national park boundaries can change what a normal online checkout needs.
Choose the NWT Licence and Validation Together
For most Northwest Territories sport fishing trips, choose the licence class first: NWT resident, Resident Canadian, or non-resident. Then buy through the NWT eServices online portal or use the official NWT fishing licence vendor directory for an in-person purchase.
For GNWT online licence setup, follow the NWT eServices path, then confirm whether the destination needs an added authorization, validation, or separate permit.
For 2026-27, the season sport fishing licence is listed at $12.31 for NWT residents, $24.63 for Resident Canadians, and $49.27 for non-residents before GST. The official table shows totals of $12.93, $25.86, and $51.73 after 5% GST. Resident Canadian and non-resident visitors can also compare 3-day products at $18.47 or $36.95 and 1-day products at $12.31.
The second step matters just as much as the licence itself. Great Bear Lake, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Edéhzhíe National Wildlife Area, and national park boundaries can trigger M1 authorization, I1 authorization, a National Wildlife Area permit, or a Parks Canada sport fishing licence.
Choose the Right NWT Visitor Class
NWT online licence setup usually needs the class decision before the checkout button. A Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid Canadian address is handled differently from a visitor from outside Canada.

2026-27 NWT Licence Prices for Visitors
The NWT fee table is useful because short-trip products exist for visitors. A one-day licence can make sense for a highway stop, while a 3-day licence can fit a lodge arrival or long weekend.

The official table lists a separate 5% GST line and total fee for each product. Annual sport fishing licences expire on March 31, so a late-season purchase should be compared with the actual fishing dates.
Great Bear Lake Is the Big Extra Check
Great Bear Lake is not a normal licence-only trip. Buy the standard sport fishing licence through NWT eServices or an official listed vendor, then make sure the Great Bear Lake Special Management Area M1 authorization is attached before fishing.

What it means
2026-27 cost
M1 Great Bear Lake authorization
Required with the NWT sport fishing licence when Great Bear Lake is part of the trip.
$12.31 plus GST; $12.93 total
This extra check also matters for anglers who might otherwise be age-exempt. If Great Bear Lake is part of the trip, treat the authorization as part of the buying step rather than something to sort out later.
For lodge, outfitter, or fly-in trips, ask about the Great Bear Lake M1 authorization when the travel dates are booked. It is much easier to fix before arrival than from the dock.
ISR, Edéhzhíe, and National Parks
The Inuvialuit Settlement Region has its own I1 authorization path. Edéhzhíe National Wildlife Area and Parks Canada waters use separate permit or licence checks, not ordinary territory-wide licence add-ons.

Inuvialuit Settlement Region
I1 ISR authorization
The authorization is listed as free, but it still needs to be part of the trip paperwork.
Inuvialuit private lands

The GNWT I1 authorization and the Inuvialuit private lands registry are separate checks.
Edéhzhíe National Wildlife Area
National Wildlife Area permit
A standard NWT sport fishing licence is not enough by itself.
National parks, park reserves, and national historic sites
Parks Canada sport fishing licence
Park waters are outside the normal NWT licence path.
These checks are easiest to handle before payment or lodge arrival. If the water sits near a boundary, confirm the exact area rather than relying on the territory-wide licence alone.
What to Carry and Check Before You Fish
Carry the licence and any added validation where you can show it when asked. If you bought online, save a copy before leaving reliable service.
Before fishing, check the current sport fishing guide for the management area, species, daily limit, possession limit, and gear rule. The NWT rules include barbless hooks, one line in open water, and up to two lines while ice fishing.
Named closures can change a route even when the licence class is correct: Big Fish River and its tributaries are closed year-round; Fish Creek and its tributaries are closed year-round; Mosquito Creek and the Great Slave Lake mouth within 1 km are closed May 1 through June 30; Providence Creek and the Mackenzie River mouth within 100 m are closed April 15 through May 30; Yellowknife River between Prosperous Lake and Bluefish Lake is closed September 1 through October 31; Baker Creek is closed April 15 through June 15; and Rat River, Husky Channel, and Peel Channel are closed August 7 through September 15. Check the GNWT closed waters and special permit areas page for the current water-specific rule.
For the full regulation overview, check the Northwest Territories province page, then return here when the issue is online buying or visitor licence class.
Yes. The Northwest Territories provides an online fishing licence service and also lists licence vendors. Choose the correct class and check whether the destination needs an added authorization, validation, or permit.
How much is an NWT fishing licence for visitors in 2026-27?
For 2026-27, the season licence is listed at $24.63 for Resident Canadians and $49.27 for non-residents before GST. Visitor 3-day and 1-day products are also listed.
What is the difference between Resident Canadian and non-resident in the NWT?
A Resident Canadian is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid Canadian address. A non-resident is a visitor who does not have a valid NWT or Canadian address.
Do I need anything extra for Great Bear Lake?
Yes. Great Bear Lake Special Management Area requires a sport fishing licence plus the M1 validation. For 2026-27, the validation is listed at $12.31 plus GST.
Do children or seniors need NWT validation for special areas?
Under section 27(1) of the Northwest Territories Fishery Regulations, non-residents under 16 must be accompanied by a licence holder. The current GNWT licence table lists anglers under 16 or aged 65 or older as exempt from the territory sport fishing licence when they have a valid NWT or Canadian address. An angler aged exactly 16 is outside those age exemptions and needs the standard licence. Standard licence exemptions do not remove M1, I1, Edéhzhíe, or park permit requirements.
Does an NWT fishing licence work in national parks?
No. NWT sport fishing licences are not valid in national parks, national park reserves, or national historic sites. Each area needs its own Parks Canada sport fishing licence.
